Rey Mysterio had to give up the WWE United States Championship due to injury, but he should be back sometime this summer according to a recent interview.

WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio won the United States Championship from Samoa Joe at Money in the Bank in May. The match was not without controversy, with the referee completing the three count in Mysterio’s favor despite Joe’s shoulders not being down on the mat.

But even more unfortunately is that Mysterio suffered a shoulder injury in the match, which resulted in him relinquishing the title (to Joe) on Monday Night Raw a week ago.

Mysterio provided an update on his injury in an interview with Wrestling Inc.’s WINCLY Podcast this week, and it appears that the WWE Grand Slam Champion has his sights set on a summertime return.

Per Mysterio, “Due to the unfortunate aftermath after winning the title, I suffered a separated left shoulder. That has put me on the bench, so I’ve been doing some PRP and slight rotation movements. I’m trying to see if I could get back in possibly late June or July.”

“PRP” stands for platelet-rich plasma, an injection that serves as a treatment to help promote healing following injury. Mysterio posted on Instagram about the treatments in late May:

Upon relinquishing the belt to Joe, Joe used the moment as an opportunity to fit in one final beatdown of Mysterio. Mysterio also noted to Joe that he’ll be back and will want to fight for the United States Championship once again, hinting that the feud would only be put on hold and not abandoned entirely due to Mysterio’s injury. It also implied that Mysterio’s injury wasn’t serious enough to put him on the shelf for all that long.

Therefore, barring setbacks, we should assume that the Mysterio-Joe rivalry will resume at some point this summer, perhaps leading to a blow-off match at SummerSlam in August.
