2. Patrick Marleau

Age: 39
Position: LW

After two stints in the Stanley Cup playoffs — and two heartbreaking defeats administered by none other than the Boston Bruins — as a member of the blue and white, it is all but confirmed that Patrick Marleau will be on his way out of Toronto in the near future. Establishing reports of the speculative variety as truth, the veteran winger has put his $11.888 million home up for sale. The marriage between franchise and player, it seems, nears its seemingly inevitable conclusion.

With reports circulating that Marleau and his family are hoping to return to the California area, another narrative is added to the Maple Leafs’ offseason. But the task of moving Marleau shall be far from an easy process. The 39-year-old is already one of the sport’s oldest players, and his unfavorable totals in 2018-19 — 16 goals, 21 assists and 37 points in 82 games — sharply limits Dubas’ list of potential trading partners.

As such, the rumor mill operates — albeit in a limited fashion. The Los Angeles Kings and the Arizona Coyotes are expected to have kicked the tires on Marleau, with pundits divided on the extent of the San Jose Sharks’ interest in the former face of the California-based franchise. Look for Marleau’s eventual departure to be an assets-in, assets-out type of deal.
