Fantasy Football Dynasty League Rookie Draft

Preparing for your upcoming Fantasy Football Dynasty league rookie draft and mocks are not cutting it? I think it might be beneficial for readers to see the results of an actual dynasty league rookie draft. I will share with you the results of the first 2 rounds of my league’s rookie draft.

Then, I will go through each first round pick and share insight and reaction to what transpired. Members in my Fantasy Football Dynasty league have also provided quotes as to why they drafted a specific target.

Due to the practice squad rule we have in our league, picks are mostly best player available (i.e. I picked Josh Jacobs even though the only WR on my roster is Doug Baldwin) and hardly ever need-based (i.e. I had to pick David Montgomery because old man Frank Gore is my best running back).

League Rules you need to know:

5 player practice squad for rookies that does not count towards our salary cap. You can call up a rookie from your practice squad to your active roster at any time. However, once the rookie is called up to start, then the rookie cannot go back to practice squad.

League is 0.5ppr with standard scoring.
You start 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1RB/WR/TE (FLEX), 1K, 1DEF

Fantasy Football Dynasty Dynasty Rookie Draft Results

1.01 – Josh Jacobs, RB OAK

  • Jacobs may not be the consensus number one rookie draft pick, but he is pretty darn close. I ranked him number one in my rankings, but I do not see him as an instant classic. He is not Saquon. But, he is a tremendous talent in a great situation.

1.02 – N’Keal Harry, WR NEP

  • “If Bill Belichick likes him, then I like him”
  • You cannot argue with the logic there. Harry is a big, physical wide receiver with plus athleticism. He should slide into the role that Josh Gordon left. A 40 year old Tom Brady can distribute the rock as well as anyone. His upside may not be immense his first few years, but he will be a good fantasy football asset and could develop into a star.

1.03 – David Montgomery, RB CHI

  • “Montgomery is going to be the Bears leading rusher”
  • I was just in Chicago last weekend and the radio commentators were really talking up Montgomery. They too think that he is going to be the bell-cow in that offense. That is a good position to be in if the 2019 edition is anything like the 2018 edition. Do not forget that Montgomery is competing for touches with the very capable Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis.

1.04 – DK Metcalf, WR SEA

  • “Pretty sure he is taking Metcalf”. “Interesting, I wonder why would he put himself through that stress”.
  • I am not a fan of DK Metcalf. He is an athlete. I want a football player. His stats at Ole Miss were less than desirable. He goes to a great situation, but I see him getting eaten up at the next level. If his athleticism was not enough to get him more than 26 receptions last year, then I am not interested. I will say this, he may have the most upside in this entire draft if he works his ass off and improves on all the little things he has never needed to work on. Even with that, he is going to be injured to often to make me want to buy his stock.

1.05 – Parris Campbell, WR IND

  • Campbell was my pick, and everyone knew this was going to be my pick. I am enamored by Campbell’s athleticism, and impressed by his route-running. He is far from a polished product, but I see significant fantasy upside with Andrew Luck throwing him the ball. He should slide into a role opposite TY Hilton, and put up huge numbers this year and in years to come. The Colts needed a complement for TY, and they chose wisely. Maybe its all wishful thinking, but I have Campbell projected for 52/770/4 this year. He should get touches out of the backfield and in the return game as well. The future is bright.

1.06 – Hakeem Butler, WR ARI

  • This was an upside pick. I am not enthralled with Butler as an NFL talent. He is an athletic freak, but he struggles with drops and his change of direction leaves something to be desired. The situation is not bad. Kyler Murray may be a gunsliner at the next level. But I think Andy Isabela fits the Kyler Murray target better than a straight line guy like Butler. I would have rather seen Butler on a team like Detroit, because two Kenny Golladay‘s is what Stafford needs.

1.07 – Kyler Murray, QB ARI

  • “I like Kyler in this offense. I feel like they are going to let him loose and air raid”.
  • The Arizona offense is much better than it was in 2018. That is not saying much though, as the 2018 offense was historically bad. That being said, the reason for their inefficiencies was the offensive line. They need to sure that up for Kyler to be relevant. Arizona spent a 1st overall pick on Kyler for a reason and I assume they will give him every opportunity to succeed. Mid/Late 1st round, I cannot fault this pick.

1.08 – Miles Sanders, RB PHI

  • “Not a huge fan of his landing spot, but they spent a 2nd round pick. That means something”.
  • I totally agree. I love Doug Peaderson as a coach. He had some say in this pick. However, the Eagles are not lacking at running back depth. They traded with the Chicago Bears, adding Jordan Howard to a group that already consists of Josh Adams, Corey Clement, and Wendell Smallwood. Sanders has a lot of youth to compete with for the foreseeable future.

1.09 – AJ Brown, WR TEN

  • “Brown is too good to let fall further than this”
  • AJ Brown may have been my favorite wide receiver entering the draft. He does everything well, and he knows how to get open. He is a solid route runner and has the athleticism to complement. I have not given up on Marcus Mariota yet. That being said, this was not the ideal scenario for Brown to succeed.

1.10 – Mecole Hardman, WR KCC

  • “Mahomes will have to throw to someone”
  • The drafting of Mecole Hardman was a clear response to the pending suspension to Tyreek Hill. Is he the next Tyreek Hill on the field? Probably not. I cannot fault anyone for drafting Hardman though. He goes into a terrific spot. Assuming Hill is suspended for some of the 2019 season, the only real threat to targets is Travis Kelce.

1.11 – TJ Hockenson, TE DET

  • Tight ends do not typically succeed as rookies. However, we are not only drafting for this year. Hockenson is a unique talent that should be a productive member in the Lions offense for years to come. If you could get fantasy points for a tight end’s blocking, he would have deserved to be drafted earlier in the 1st round.

1.12 – Darrell Henderson, RB LAR

  • The rise and fall of Todd Gurley was intriguing television last season. When McVay is relying more heavily on old man CJ Anderson down the stretch, you know there is something wrong with Gurley. Henderson was a good pick here. He reminds me of a younger, skinnier CJ Anderson. If there is something wrong with Gurley, this pick was a steal, because Henderson can be a very good player.
