The USWNT’s three first-half goals from Carli Lloyd and Julie Ertz send the Americans to the round of 16 at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
In a game filled with goals, records and changes, the United States Women’s National Team handily defeated Chile, 3-0, to book a spot in the round of 16 at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Carli Lloyd’s first-half strike gave her a record sixth-straight World Cup game with a goal.
A big story was U.S. head coach Jill Ellis making seven lineup changes from the team’s 13-0 win against Thailand, including resting the front trio of Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath and Megan Rapinoe.
Set pieces also proved to be a huge difference maker, as the U.S. had 15 corner kicks; two led to goals by Julie Ertz and Lloyd.
Twitter was pleased with the USWNT’s win and Chile No. 1’s heroic outing.
Congratulations to the @USWNT as they seal a spot in the Round of 16! #FIFAWWC https://t.co/J7LnWhOFKG

Can we please give a slow clap 👏🏼....👏🏼....👏🏼 for Christiane Endler, the GK for Chile. My word, what a game. Could have been 6 or 7 goals if not for her huge night. Just ask Christen Press. #USACHI

US men's national team: 16 World Cup goals in the last 6,219 days.
US women's national team: 16 World Cup goals in the last 3 halves.
The second half proved to be one of changes and more American aggression. Jessica McDonald replaced Ertz at halftime, Soon, Allie Long and Emily Sonnett became the final outfield players to see the field for the USWNT in France.
Abby just said “every single field player has now played in this World Cup.” Then she smiled. I don’t know what that means but it seemed important. @AbbyWambach @USWNT

After scoring three goals, the U.S. threw everything looking for more, but Chile goalkeeper Christiane Endler came up with six big saves with to avoid a possible rout.
Endler's standing on her head in the 2nd half. Could be 6-0, but it's still 3-0. Meanwhile, Allie Long comes on. Emily Sonnett is only US field player who hasn't seen action yet. Is she next?

The Americans could have scored a fourth goal after VAR ruled Yessenia Huenteo pulled down long in the box, but Lloyd missed her hat trick as she pushed her kick wide of Endler’s net.
Meanwhile, U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher had one nervy moment in the first half, but Chile could not breach her net with any shots on goal.
The U.S. and Sweden are tied with six points, with the Americans enjoying a plus-10 goal differential heading into a winner-take-all showdown for Group F on Thursday in Le Havre.
