Women’s World Cup DFS Breakdown – Tuesday 6/18/19
By Vince Dray
The 2019 Women’s World Cup continues in France on Tuesday with a smallish slate. Italy and Brazil face off in one game and Australia will take on Jamaica in the other. Both games are still crucially important. The slate does not begin until 3p ET, so there’s going to be plenty of time to make lineups using advice from this Women’s World Cup DFS Breakdown.
Three teams can still advance out of Group C, with Jamaica being the team already eliminated. Australia are massive 3.5 goal favorites against Jamaica in this game, and will no doubt be a popular team to stack. They need to secure a win by a substantial goal margin in order to have a chance at surpassing Brazil and qualifying for the next round. The goal total over/under in this game is 4.5, which only adds to the appeal of a game stack here.
Italy currently sit atop Group C and are all but through to the knockout stage. They’ll have a tough challenge against Brazil, a team who have many possible paths to advancing. Brazil is favored in this game by 0.5. Italy has been playing above themselves, and I could see this game going either way. The goal total over/under is only 2.5, a whole 2 goals lower than the other game.
There isn’t really much else to note here before we get to plays. All 4 teams are healthy, and we should see minimal squad rotation compared to in the past few days.
Women’s World Cup – Forward/Midfield Targets
Christiane (Brazil v. Italy, $22) – The Brazilian goal scorer has been in spectacular form so far in the World Cup. She has 4 goals in Brazil’s first 2 games, and now faces and Italian defense that has been prone to making costly mistakes. She doesn’t pick up many other peripheral stats which doesn’t help her fantasy floor, but Brazil need a good result in this game, and she’ll be a crucial part of their attack on Tuesday. I don’t mind taking $2 savings for Marta, one of the better women’s soccer players ever, but she missed the opening game only played 45 last game so be prepared for that.
Sam Kerr (Australia v. Jamaica, $20) – Sam Kerr has broken 25 FD points in both games now, and I’m calling that her floor in this great matchup. Kerr is Australia’s most dangerous goal scorer, and this is an incredible matchup against a Jamaica team that has already given up 8 goals in just 2 games. Australia need a win, so Kerr and the rest of Australia’s attack will come out firing. The fact that she’s $2 cheaper than Christiane and Girelli is something I want to take advantage of on this slate.
Caitlin Foord (Australia v. Jamaica, $16) – Continuing on with Australian attackers, Foord should be involved in the possible barrage against Jamaica. She scored in Australia’s 3-2 win against Brazil and scored a solid 17 FD points in her first game. The combination of Kerr and Foord is going to be popular, especially since it’s affordable, but the chalk won’t deter me from playing either since they’re just in such great spots. Chloe Logarzo ($16) and Emily Gielnik ($16) are great options to get a third Australian attacker. Logarzo is usually involved more in the attack, but Gielnik usually gets more peripherals.
Women’s World Cup – Forward/Midfield Value
Elise Kellond-Knight (Australia v. Jamaica, $8) – Kellond-Knight is the most obvious value play on the slate, because getting almost anyone else cheap requires taking a shot at a Jamaican midfielder. I’m not sure what’s going on with FanDuel’s game logs, but I think that error has created a pricing error here with Kellond-Knight. Kellond-Knight did not feature in Australia’s first game but started the 2nd game and had a positive impact on the team’s attack. She was able to create 3 chances and collected enough other peripherals to give her some value. She should be able to create several chances again in this matchup.
Trudi Carter (Australia v. Jamaica, $8) – Jamaica really have not been able to get anything going offensively in their first two games, and a matchup with a top 5 team in Australia won’t make it any easier. Khadija Shaw ($14) is the clear top attacker for the team, and could maybe be worth a shot in GPPs, but saving $6 and going for Carter allows you to get other top targets. Carter has great speed and likes to pressure opposing defenders into making mistakes. She could be able to find Australian defenders attacking and out of position and use her speed to punish them. Havana Solaun ($12) has been playing well, but her upside in this matchup is too limited for me to use her.
Women’s World Cup – Target Defenders
Elena Linari (Brazil v. Italy, $14) – Linari was all over on defense against Jamaica, collecting 20.6 of her 23.6 FDP on defensive stats. While I don’t normally like to pay for expensive defenders who don’t do much attacking, Linari should see low ownership again on Tuesday which could really pay off if she plays well again. Brazil play a very aggressive attacking style, and that should force Linari into making plays on defense and getting more peripherals.

Allyson Swaby (Australia v. Jamaica, $12) – Swaby is actually a Jamaican defender I feel good about targeting. She made 11 clearances last game, and since Jamaica will be under fire again against Australia, another double-digit clearance game is definitely possible. A few other peripherals would be great, but I’m okay just chasing the clearances.
Ellie Carpenter (Australia v. Jamaica, $12) – I’m still waiting on Carpenter to really get going in the World Cup. She’s one of the best young player in the tournament as a dangerous attacking defender for Australia, but she hasn’t reached her ceiling yet in the first two games. She’s creating 2 chances per game and she’s getting several other peripherals, but it’s only a matter of time before she really goes off. That could be Tuesday. Australia has already battled with two really respectable teams in Brazil and Italy, and Jamaica should be a cakewalk for them. Carpenter will have plenty of opportunities to attack and create for her teammates.
Value Defenders
Alanna Kennedy (Australia v. Jamaica, $8) – In the first two games, defenders against Jamaica were able to get a good number of peripherals due to Jamaica’s counterattacking style. This bodes well for Kennedy’s fantasy value on Tuesday. Australia has also yet to keep a clean sheet, but I expect them to against Jamaica. That will be a huge extra 5 points which makes Kennedy one of my top value plays on the slate.
Women’s World Cup – Goalkeepers
Lydia Williams (Australia v. Jamaica, $16) – Williams is the easy pick here for people who aren’t casual players. Many will look at her ugly game log and run away, but just remember that Jamaica are 3.5 goal favorites which means she’s almost a lock for a win bonus. I also think the Australian defense finally tightens up and doesn’t allow a goal. That’s already 17 bonus points for Williams. Any save points are just icing on the cake.
Barbara (Brazil v. Italy, $14) – If you’ve maxed out your Australian exposure on field players, Barbara is my next favorite GK. Brazil need a good result here to advance, which might mean shutting Italy down. Italy has scored 7 goals in 2 games, but no one expected that many really. Italy is essentially through to the next round which might lead to bench players starting or lack of motivation. Barbara could have the perfect balance between save points and bonus points to have a big game.
