NBA Free Agency 2019: 5 offseason targets for the Philadelphia 76ers
2. Danny Green, SG
Danny Green’s free-agent fate likely comes down to Kawhi Leonard.
If Leonard re-signs with the Toronto Raptors fresh off winning this year’s NBA championship, Green figures to as well. If Leonard leaves for the Clippers or another team, Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri may embark upon a larger-scale rebuild, which means Green would have to find a new home.
Much like Process favorite Robert Covington, Green is a streaky shooter, but he drilled a career-best 45.5 percent of his 3-point attempts this past season in Toronto. He’s also an excellent defender whose 6-foot-6, 215-pound frame allows him to switch between guarding multiple positions.
The soon-to-be 32-year-old Green fits the 3-and-D archetype that every contender lusts after, which suggests he’ll be in high demand on the free-agent market. The non-taxpayer mid-level exception is likely his floor, although some team could come in with an eight-figure annual offer to outbid the likes of Philadelphia and others.
If the Sixers did sign Green, they may decide to shift Redick to the bench, as the former is a far more versatile two-way player. Considering James Ennis played some crunch-time minutes in the playoffs in place of Redick, head coach Brett Brown may prefer to have a defensive-minded wing in the closing minutes of tight games.
