Hertha Berlin CB Niklas Stark

Bayern Munich have reportedly shown interest in Hertha Berlin defender Niklas Stark for months, and their intrigue is understandable. Stark has quietly been one of the biggest breakout stars in the Bundesliga over the past year, vaulting himself to German international status.

He played a sensational game against Bayern in the Ruckrunde, stifling Bayern’s attack by making smart interceptions and gutsy last-ditch challenges. The 24-year-old worked his tail off in that 1-0 February loss, essentially covering the flank and the central portions of the field against a Bayern team that needed a perfectly executed corner to beat the underdogs.

Stark has been quiet in transfer rumors this summer, but all it takes is an interested Bayern to make him a hot commodity on the open market. He could also be a bargain for Bayern, as his valuation is around 20 million euros, per Transfermarkt.

Stark would surely love to play significant minutes for Bayern, who could purchase him for his reported 25 million euro release clause. Die Roten, judging by the Hernandez and Pavard signings, value youth and versatility in their back four.

Stark is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, too. Since Javi Martinez is getting older, Stark’s ability to play in the midfield could make him a more attractive option for the Bundesliga champions.
