Borussia Dortmund have signed veteran center back Mats Hummels from Bayern Munich, and here are three reasons why this feel-good reunion will help the Black and Yellow in 2019-2020.

In their first season under manager Lucien Favre, Borussia Dortmund shattered expectations by immediately competing with Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title. While a bevy of mid-season injuries held Dortmund back and prevented them from capturing the title, Dortmund can head into the 2019-2020 season with the confidence that they have a chance at unseating a Bayern squad that remains in transition.

Bayern’s transition focuses on getting younger. They’ve already shed Rafinha, Arjen Robben, and Franck Riberty this summer, and they have brought in young stars like Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez. Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Leroy Sane, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and other young attackers are squarely on Bayern’s radar, too.

As part of this youth movement, Bayern have sold star center back Mats Hummels back to Borussia Dortmund for 38 million euros, per Kicker. Dortmund have officially confirmed that Hummels is on his way back after previously playing for – and captaining – the Black and Yellow from 2009 to 2016.

Hummels was once an important part of Dortmund’s success under Jurgen Klopp, but this reunion is about more than just feelings. The 30-year-old is still one of the best defensive players in the world, and here are three ways he can help Dortmund in 2019-2020.
