Popeyes selling massive box of chicken in honor of Zion Williamson
By Dave Daniels
Popeyes is doing something gigantic to celebrate the New Orleans Pelicans likely drafting Zion William No. 1 in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Whether or not this is a ploy to sign Zion Williamson to an endorsement deal remains to be seen, but Popeyes is selling a 6-foot-10-inch box of chicken to honor the presumptive No. 1 NBA draft pick.
They gave an interesting reason for this.
“There’s been a lot of speculation and buzz around New Orleans and their likelihood to bring home a big name, with a wingspan of 6 feet and 10 inches, as their No. 1 draft pick,” Popeyes said in a statement.
It seems that they are honoring a player’s wingspan with some wings. It’s only fitting. The box includes 77 pieces of chicken, 11 biscuits, and 11 orders of fries and it will be sold at a single locale in New Orleans on Thursday for $74.69.
That’s a lot of grease.
Many people love that chicken from Popeyes, but do they love it this much? There will probably be plenty of NBA Draft parties in New Orleans tomorrow with a big box as their caterer.
Zion won three straight state championships in high school and was voted to the McDonald’s All-American team. He became a YouTube sensation at Spartanburg Day School for his highlight-reel dunks.
He proved in college to be more than a one-trick pony, though. Williamson played for the Duke Blue Devils last season, and he won AP Player of the Year after averaging an absurd 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per game as a freshman. He managed to do all of that while shooting 68 percent from the field.
Ladies and gentlemen, that is what we call a once-in-a-generation player.
Popeyes is either betting on hoards of inebriated people buying a giant box of chicken tomorrow or trying to flatter Williamson into a long-term business arrangement. You can’t blame them for it. He plays with passion and has next level athleticism. His wingspan apparently doesn’t hurt either, especially when it comes to selling drumsticks.
