Max Kepler lifts Twins over Red Sox in the 17th inning, and some other things
A lot happened on Tuesday, but you can’t be blamed for missing some of it — so let’s go over the highlights.
Oh boy, where to start.
Max Kepler’s 17th inning walk-off lifts the Twins over the Red Sox, Marta becomes the leading goal scorer in World Cup history, Brett Farve seemingly announces his return to the NFL.
If you missed — or feel like you missed — anything from a very busy Tuesday in sports, we have you covered. Here’s the cliff notes version of a surprisingly busy day and night:
1. Max Kepler wins it for Minnesota with 17th-inning walk-off
Max Kepler was determined to help the Twins get a win on Tuesday. The Minnesota slugger initially tied the game with a single in the eighth inning and then again with a homer in the 13th. Yet, it would take a total of 17 innings (five-hours and 45-minutes) before Kepler put the game away for good with a walk-off single to secure the 4-3 victory.
2. Marta becomes leading goal scorer in World Cup history
Some of the greatest Brazilian soccer stars like Pelé and Ronaldo are referred to simply by one name. Brazil women’s soccer star Marta is no exception, having cemented herself in World Cup history when she scored her 17th World Cup finals goal against Italy last night. The goal gave Brazil the win and made her the leading scorer in both the men’s and women’s version of the World Cup tournament.

3. Rookie Jordan Yamamoto records his second consecutive scoreless game
Jordan Yamamoto has started only two games for the Marlins so far, but he’s already making history. In just his second start, the 23-year-old Kailua, Hawaii native posted his second consecutive scoreless outing and allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven in the Marlins’ 6-0 win over St. Louis. According to Baseball-Reference.com, Yamamoto is the first pitcher since 1908 to start his career with back-to-back games pitching seven or more scoreless innings and allowing only three or fewer hits.
4. Jackie Bradley Jr. once again proves he’s the best outfield defender
We’re convinced Jackie Bradley Jr. has a quota of top defensive plays he has to reach each week because the Red Sox center fielder seems to make a highlight-worthy catch almost every night. Tuesday was no exception when Bradley Jr. scaled the wall to rob Jorge Polanco of an extra-base hit.
5. Giancarlo Stanton makes a catch in the stands
Giancarlo Stanton’s return will add even more power to an already lethal Yankees lineup. Yet, in his first game back after a 68-game absence rehabbing injuries, it was Giancarlo Stanton’s glove that got people talking. On Tuesday, the Yankees outfielder made a nifty catch that required getting up close an personal with fans. Welcome back Giancarlo!
Overtime: Brett Farve comes out of retirement … again?
Brett Frave shocked NFL fans the first two times that he came out of retirement, but fans were losing their minds on Tuesday after Farve’s official Instagram account posted a photo of him hoisting the Lombardi with the caption “A true champion sticks to his or her calling. I will be coming out of retirement and making my return to play in the NFL for the 2020 season.” However, as many speculated, the real Farve quickly announced that his account was hacked and has since deleted the post. What’s crazier, the fact that Farve was hacked or that given his history, it was somewhat believable?
