Carolina Panthers: Kerry Collins

The first collegiate selection of the Carolina Panthers franchise, Kerry Collins came to the organization after a standout career at Penn State. The No. 5 overall selection in the 1995 NFL Draft, Collins showed early on that he had the potential to bring a team to the playoffs, but his tenure in Carolina was extremely short-lived.

Collins was thrown into  the fire early at the NFL level, appearing in 15 games as a rookie for the Panthers. Like most rookies do, Collins struggled with the interceptions early on, but the following season, he proved himself to be one of the better starting quarterbacks in all of football.

In Carolina’s second season as an NFL team, Collins led the Panthers to the playoffs, posting a 9-3 record as the team’s starter. Making his only Pro Bowl as a member of the organization, he brought the Panthers all the way to the NFC Championship Game, where they eventually lost to the Green Bay Packers.

After a 7-9 season in 1997, Collins and his Panthers teammates got off to a horrible start in 1998, going 0-4, and prompting the quarterback to go into head coach Dom Capers’ office and say his heart was not in it anymore. The team eventually waived Collins, ending his run as the starter, and what could have been a very productive career for him in Carolina.
