Main DraftKings MLB Picks June 22: Ryu da man!

The main prime time DraftKings MLB tournaments only have five games tonight as most of the action was during the day. That’s probably a good thing as many of those cities will have rain in the evening. Will the weather mess with any of the night games? Let’s take a look! The evening slate is actually the smaller DraftKings MLB slate with only five prime time games.

More from DraftKings

No rain is in the forecast for the five games tonight, but we do have a 12 mph crosswind in New York. It is hot and humid in Texas as usual, but there is a big 16 mph wind in from right that may help keep some balls in the park.

I really hate MLB DFS. It’s the worst. You can do all of the research you want someone unexpected goes off. Last night was simply a case of failed stacks for me. One Sonny Gray to Aaron Nola with my Twins stack would have had me well in the money. Staying off the Yankees and Angels would have saved a chunk of change. How horrible is pitching lately? Mike Leake got the win last night and still lost points.

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on, and we all attack the slate from different angles.

DraftKings MLB Pitcher Plays:

Top Tier:

Hyun-Jin Ryu ($11,500): Ryu is so good right now (9-1, 1.26 ERA) that I would consider using him at this price even on a full slate. There’s going to be a ton of ownership, but I don’t think we can fade Ryu tonight. He has a 0.87 ERA and 0.70 WHIP in seven home starts this season. Forget Kershaw, those are Bob Gibson type numbers! 11-5 could be a bargain!

Lance Lynn ($10,100): Lynn is expensive considering he has a 4.16 ERA on the season. He is also guaranteed four points for the win, so we have to factor that in. Lynn does have a 2.82 ERA in his last eight starts though, so he has improved since the early season. On top of that, Lynn is piling on the strikeouts, and the White Sox strike out a lot. You could consider a Ryu fade in GPP’s due to the massive strikeout upside on Lynn here tonight.

Middle Tier:

Masahiro Tanaka ($9,400): I’ve tried to talk myself out of Tanaka, but this Astros lineup still has plenty of holes. On top of that, Tanaka has a 2.83 home ERA and held the Astros to just one run and three hits earlier this year. The main issue here is that I don’t know if I can move off of Ryu for Tanaka, nor do I know if I can comfortably fit both in my lineup.

Zack Godley ($6,900): The middle tier of pitching tonight is full of crap. Literal crap. Godley may quite possibly be part of said crap. However, being exiled to the bullpen was good for him aside from his last outing where he got creamed by the Nationals. Godley registers a decent amount of strikeouts, and this Giants lineup isn’t imposing at all. There is a glimmer of hope here, albeit faint.

Bargain Pitchers:

Mike Foltynewicz ($6,400): Look, I know Folty is struggling, but this price is ridiculous. Only SunTrust Park has tortured him. Foltynewicz has a much more respectable 4.00 ERA on the road. While I will agree that he still doesn’t look 100% right, he still gets a solid amount of strikeouts. I expect Folty to give up three or four runs here, but I’m thinking he gets enough strikeouts to still give him a solid total. If he gets 15 DraftKings points, I’ll be happy.

Peter Lambert ($5,500): Let’s give the kid a break. He was destroyed by the Padres in Coors in his last outing. The chances of him giving up eight runs in L.A. is pretty low. So are his chances of winning this game. However, at this price we aren’t expecting miracles. If Lambert escapes with a dozen or so DraftKings points, I think we’ll be happy. Of course, the Dodgers are a dangerous team. There’s a ton of risk playing in the shallow end tonight.

My picks: Ryu, Foltynewicz, Ryu, Lynn

DraftKings MLB daily notes:

Anthony Rendon is 7-25(.280) with a homer and seven RBI against Foltynewicz so far. Kurt Suzuki and Trea Turner have also homered against Foltynewicz. My issue here is price. All of the Nationals hitters are priced up. You better be damn sure they hit or you’re going to be stuck at the bottom. Only Adam Eaton and Brian Dozer aren’t overpriced. I’ll limit my exposure to them.

Every time I try to stack against Anibal Sanchez, he trolls me. Just like Cashner. Brian McCann is the auto play here. McCann is 11-38(.289) with two homers and nine RBI off of Sanchez. Matt Joyce and Josh Donaldson have homered off of Sanchez as well. If McCann doesn’t start, fret not. Backup Tyler Flowers has slugged a homer off of Sanchez as well. If you’re thinking about Freeman, save your money. Freeman is just 3-13 with no extra base hits and no RBI against Sanchez.

Cody Bellinger is almost a must play against rookie Peter Lambert tonight. So is Max Muncy if he is in the lineup. Alex Verdugo is a good way to save some money, but beyond those three, I don’t really see anyone else. That makes for a nice mini stack though.

How can we not stack Rangers against Odrisamer Despaigne tonight? Choo, Nomar Mazara, and Asdrubal Cabrera will probably be in all of my lineups. It’s going to be hard to keep Danny Santana and a super cheap Ronald Guzman out of there too. Every single Ranger is worth a look tonight, even though they weren’t all that great last night.

Tyler Beede trolled us all by allowing just one run to the Dodgers over six innings in his last start. That is why I hate stacking Dodgers in a microcosm. They only mustered one run, yet Beede issued five walks. He should have been thumped! There’s a good chance Beede gets his due tonight. Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar are hitting almost everything. I still like Adam Jones at his price as well. I will have plenty of Nick Ahmed if he is back in the lineup.

On the other side of the Godley coin is this: he has given up four runs to the Giants in 6.1 innings. His worst outing against them was in relief though. Not sure what difference it makes. Godley is a powder keg, and not in a good way. Brandon Crawford, Joe Panik, and Mike Yastrzemski all look good to me tonight.

DraftKings MLB one-off plays:

I wouldn’t completely avoid Astros tonight. Tanaka is prone to the occasional blowup, and this team has five homers against him in only 67 at bats. Altuve has two of them and is just $3,400! Bregman, Brantley, and Josh Reddick have the other three. This could be the best plays to go for one offs tonight. I don’t know that I could stomach more than one in a lineup.

I know Arenado destroys lefties. Hell, he’s even destroyed this one. Arenado is 11-19(.579) with three homers and seven RBI in his career against Ryu. I still don’t know if I can use him, but I’ll tell you this: you may never see Arenado priced at $4,200 ever again. Mark Reynolds is just $2,400 and he’s 3-8 with a homer off of Ryu for those of you feeling brave.

If you want to use Wade Miley in Yankee Stadium tonight, be my guest. The $8,000 price tag actually isn’t that bad. The issue is that the Yankees are hitting .303 against Miley and he has a 4.68 road ERA. Really, only Edwin has really hit him hard. Encarnacion is 7-19(.368) with all three homers and six of the 13 RBI against Miley.

However, a ton of the Yankees right handed power is back and is very affordable. I’m going to have some exposure to Judge and Stanton as well.

No current White Sox player has homered off of Lance Lynn, and I’m pretty certain that trend will continue. Jose Abreu seems really cheap at $4,100, but what exactly is the upside here? If you go after Lynn, you probably have to spend up for Moncada. I would just rather spend the extra money on another elite pitcher tonight. The main reason to chase White Sox is to leverage Lynn ownership. At that point, leverage Ryu ownership by paying $100 more for Arenado at a weaker position.
