Real Madrid are finally getting a women’s team next season
Real Madrid will finally have a women’s team in the 2019-2020 season, as they have reportedly agreed to an approximately 300,000-euro deal to buy recently promoted side CD Tacon.
Spain are one of the stronger teams in the 2019 Women’s World Cup and have a chance to shock the world in their first Round of 16 game against the United States. Most of Spain’s top players are stars at Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona in Liga Iberdrola, and the level of parity in the country’s top flight is essentially non-existent.
Fans have clamored for traditional Spanish football powerhouse Real Madrid to add a women’s team, and Los Blancos will finally do exactly. As confirmed by El Mundo, Real have agreed to purchase CD Tacon for 300,000 euros, and the existing club will now be absorbed by Real Madrid as their new women’s club. CD Tacon were recently promoted to the first league after just three seasons of existence, and they have been based in Madrid.
This is huge news for women’s football, even if it would have been preferable for Real to create their own team from scratch instead of buying out a successful independent club in the city that had already risen to the first league. Real have the resources to make this club a powerhouse in European football, and that should help grow the women’s game even more in Spain, as well as giving players around the world another club that can pay them a competitive wage.
Currently, no players on the CD Tacon team are on the Spanish national team, but that should change if Real put the work into making this team a powerhouse. Key rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have absolutely dominated women’s football in the company, as 21 points separated second-place Barcelona and third-place Levante in the table last season.
Barcelona and Atletico are two of the best clubs in Europe, and fans of Spanish football will hope that Real’s purchase of CD Tacon can help turn this team into a Champions League contender in the long-term. Though Atletico won the Liga Iberdrola last season, Barcelona made it to the finals of the Champions League against Lyon.
Women’s football is undergoing an important growth period in Spain this year, as the Spanish FA have announced plans to invest more money in the league and have every top-flight match streamed/broadcasted.
