For years, Sam Kerr has been one of the best strikers in the world, whether it’s setting records in the NWSL or shining for Perth Glory. However, she has a big decision to make regarding her future, as Chelsea have offered Kerr a contract reportedly worth nearly $1 million.

Sam Kerr has been as brilliant as usual at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and she saved her best performance for last in the group stages. After scoring a penalty in Australia’s opening loss to Italy and causing the own goal that won them the game against Brazil, Kerr scored four goals against Jamaica to emphatically punch the Matlidas’ ticket into the knockout stages.

Any club would love to have a striker like Kerr on their side, so it’s no surprise to see The Daily Telegraph report that Chelsea FC have offered her a two-year contract worth “close to” $1 million. Given that Kerr made $400,000 while playing for Perth Glory in Australia’s W-League last season, this reported figure is likely on an annual basis and would make her one of the highest-paid players in the women’s game.

While it’s great news that Kerr is getting a strong offer from an ambitious club in England with a strong men’s team, it’s a stark reminder that even the elite players in the women’s game are underpaid. A $1 million contract seems like nothing to sneeze at, but Kerr is one of the most intelligent strikers and prolific goal-scorers in world football.

Kerr will be focused on sending Australia, one of the tournament favorites, to the World Cup finals this year and plays a pivotal role in her sides’ success. Her focus won’t be on her club future since the former Sky Blue FC and Chicago Red Stars striker can flourish anywhere.

However, Kerr’s situation will be one to monitor after the World Cup finishes because she would be a club-defining transfer for a team like Chelsea. They are one of the three top teams in the FA Women’s Super League, but they were five points behind second-place Manchester City and 12 points behind league winners Arsenal. To be competitive with powerhouses Arsenal and City, they need a world-class striker like Kerr.
