5 famous calls that would have been changed by VAR
5. Diego Maradona’s hand creates a controversial goal
Some goals not only look great but make fans wonder how a goal-scorer could pull it off. In a 1986 World Cup quarterfinal encounter between England and Argentina, Diego Maradona’s “hand of God” goal broke England’s hearts and helped Argentina advance to the semifinals.
In the 51st minute, Maradona used his hand to score past English goalie Peter Shilton for the game’s opening goal. Later on, Maradona struck home with another goal. Gary Lineker recorded a goal for England, but Maradona’s brace gave Argentina a 2-1 win and a date with Belgium in the semi-finals.
After eliminating Belgium 2-0, Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 to win the World Cup while England wondered what might have happened if VAR would have been in place.
Today, with VAR, Maradona’s goal likely would not have counted, which would have kept the match 0-0. Argentina would have lost any possible momentum from the goal. England could have escaped with a narrow win without Maradona’s hand.
