5 famous calls that would have been changed by VAR
4. Could Scurry have been in trouble with VAR?
In the 1999 Women’s World Cup final between the USWNT and China, neither team could mangae a single goal, which meant penalties decided the match after 120 scoreless minutes at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.
After each team made its first two penalties, drama came with China’s third shooter. U.S. goalkeeper Brianna Scurry made her country proud by stopping China’s Liu Ying, which gave the Americans a big boost in the shootout. Meanwhile, the U.S. responded to Scurry’s save with three more successful penalties, including Brandi Chastain’s clincher to give the USWNT its second Women’s World Cup title.
Looking back on the penalty shootout, Scurry appeared way off her line for the deciding penalty. Few people even noticed how far Scurry was off her line and concentrated on her successful save and Chastain’s goal.
During the group stage, unsuccessful penalties were a popular topic from VAR. Many missed kicks were retaken due to encroachment. Several goalies were also shown yellow cards for being off their lines. With how aggressively VAR was used in the group stage, Scurry’s save may not have counted.
