Women’s World Cup live stream: How to watch Sweden vs. Canada
By Adam Stocker
Sweden face Canada at Parc Des Princes on Monday, June 24. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
In the penultimate day of the Round of 16, Sweden play Canada at the Parc Des Princes in Paris. Sweden finished second in their group behind the United States. Canada also finished second in their group to the Netherlands. Both nations opened the tournament winning their first two games before losing their final game in the group stage to the nation that won the group.
Sweden are among the best teams to never win the Women’s World Cup. The Swedes were runners-up in 2003 and have finished third on two occasions. Sweden have reached the quarterfinals in five of seven World Cups. The Swedish side scored seven goals in their three group stage games, with Kosovare Asllani leading her nation with two goals.
Asllani is the highest-scoring member of the Swedish team, with 32 international goals, and will play a key role in the midfield with Caroline Seger. The Swedish captain is the most experienced player on the roster and will be counted on to push Sweden’s attack forward.
Sweden and Canada have only played one game against each other in World Cup games. The Swedes defeated Canada 2-1 in the 2003 semifinal but lost to Germany in the final. In all competitions, Sweden hold a decisive edge, winning 12 of 21 games. Canada have only beaten Sweden five times. However, Canada won the most recent game, knocking Sweden out of the 2019 Algarve Cup on penalties.
The Canadians got out of the group stage for the second straight tournament and just the third time overall. Despite winning the bronze medal in the last two Olympics, Canada have not been as successful in the World Cup. The Canadians have only made it out the round of 16 twice. Canada only scored four goals in the group stage but one of the goal scorers was their captain Christine Sinclair, who scored in the loss against the Netherlands.
Sinclair has 182 international goals and only needs three goals to break Abby Wambach’s record for international goals. For Canada to advance, they need Sinclair to score against Sweden. At the back, Canada have a strong defensive team but they were shaky against the Netherlands.
