Young boxing prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr. will be back in action against Antonio Orozco on Saturday, August 10. Ortiz is quickly making a big splash.

If you don’t know who Vergil Ortiz Jr. is, you want to jump on the bandwagon real quick. Golden Boy Promotions recently announced that the welterweight will return to the ring on Saturday, Aug. 10 against Antonio Orozco on DAZN.

Ortiz is one of Golden Boy’s brightest young prospects. He’s only 21 years old but has accumulated a professional record of 13-0, with 13 knockouts. He debuted at 18 years old, but expectations were high from the start.

Ortiz was an amateur standout. He was a seven-time national amateur champion and a Junior Olympic champion. The Texas native is currently rated as the 50th best super lightweight in the world by Boxrec.com, but he’s now competing as a welterweight.

In May, Ortiz became the first boxer to knock out veteran Mauricio Herrera (24-9, 7 KOs). Herrera was a faded fighter when he met Ortiz, but he still brought a wealth of experience to the ring. It didn’t matter though as Ortiz knocked Herrera out cold inside of three rounds in what’s a knockout of the year candidate.

Ortiz’s KO of Herrera put his name on the map, and he’s now a must-see attraction. It’s hard to name a young boxer with Ortiz’s combination of potential, skill, and power.

Orozco is a logical move up in competition for Ortiz. He’s 31 years old and has a record of 28-1, with 17 KOs. Orozco is a tough test for Ortiz as he progresses up the boxing ranks. If Ortiz can continue his flawless KO streak against Orozco, then he could vault into the top 20 world rankings.

Ortiz is on the fast track to a title, but he needs to continue to progress as planned. It’s hard to imagine a boxer with Ortiz’s potential falling short of expectations, but anything is possible in boxing.
