Previewing the WWE United Kingdom Championship main event ahead of the June 26, 2019 edition of NXT UK.
In this week’s main event, Travis Banks challenges WALTER for the WWE United Kingdom Championship. Banks has become quite the perennial underdog in NXT UK, always suffering crushing failures on the cusp of success, yet never letting failure stop him from coming back for more.
In the 2018 United Kingdom Championship tournament he made it all the way to the finals only to fall short. An injury dealt at the hands of Joe Coffey would cause him to miss time immediately after. An attack by Jordan Devlin caused him to sustain a different injury, which rendered him unable to compete on the TakeOver Blackpool card. When he had a chance to exact a measure of revenge against Devlin in a Falls Count Anywhere match, he got put through a table and pinned.
Still, Banks continued to grind. He kicked out at two approximately 53 times in his qualifying match against Joseph Conners, before unleashing a flurry of unstoppable offense to notch a win. In the No. 1 contender fatal four-way, he hung around, picked his spot perfectly and overcame former tormentors Coffey and Devlin — as well as Dave Mastiff — to earn his shot at the United Kingdom Championship.
Now all Banks has to do is beat WALTER, which is way more easier said than done, and it’s not even that easy to say. WALTER does not consider Travis Banks a worthy challenger to his title, indicating as much when he referred to his challenger that’s six months his senior “a child.” Probably more of a stature thing than an age thing, but still.
Ever the buzzsaw, Banks dared the champ to bring everything he’s got to their matchup. Banks has worked too hard to be taken lightly now.
That dare may come back to bite him though, seeing as “everything” WALTER’s got has meant outside interference helping him cheat to win. It happened in his UK title rematch with Pete Dunne, it happened in Imperium’s six-man tag team match with British Strong Style. The mat is so sacred, WALTER will do whatever it takes to win. At the rate WALTER is going, there’s going to be a European wrestler joining Imperium every time he wrestles. What’s Rusev up to these days?
Travis Banks has his work cut out for him.
