Ellen White breaks England’s World Cup goal-scoring record (Video)
Ellen White has been on fire throughout the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and she broke her nation’s World Cup goal-scoring record with a 40th-minute strike against Norway.
England faced a difficult opponent in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, as Norway were just coming off of a gutsy win over Australia in the Round of 16.
But the Lionesses made it look easy, jumping out to a lead in the third minute before Ellen White gave England some breathing room in the 40th minute.
White came close to scoring in the 31st minute, smacking the post with a volley. It took less than 10 minutes for her to find the back of the net for the fifth time in this World Cup, as she gave England a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Not only was the goal White’s fifth of the tournament, putting her in the Golden Boot conversation with United States striker Alex Morgan, but it was also her sixth in a World Cup overall. This broke FOX Sports announcer and football legend Kelly Smith’s all-time record for England, and White still has plenty of more opportunities to grab more goals at the top of the list.
This was a classic goal from England, too. They have been devastating on the right side with Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris, and the combination play from them was delightful. The finish itself was simple for White, as Bronze and Parris completely unlocked the defense for the umpteenth time this tournament. However, White deserves praise for finding that space, as she’s been working hard to make herself a nuisance for defenders. White, who has become a devastating finisher, is essentially always open, and that’s why she’s been the competition’s most consistent goal-scorer thus far.
White celebrates goals in style, too, emulating FC Köln star Anthony Modeste with her “eyes” celebration. Manchester City’s newest star, White has been in top form, and it’s no surprise that she’s now become England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer.
