1. Patrick Mahomes will throw 20 interceptions

One of Mahomes’ biggest strengths as a quarterback is his ability to make plays outside the pocket. Making those sorts of improvised throws also gets the defense an increased chance to pick the ball off and take it the other way.

Mahomes only threw 12 interceptions last year, but he was also one of the luckiest passers in the NFL. Data from Football Outsiders reveals that opposing defenders dropped 10 interceptions against him in 2018. Obviously, converting those opportunities would have increased his turnover total dramatically.

None of this means that Mahomes won’t be a Pro Bowler again. He is one of the most dynamic talents in the entire league. His luck in terms of interception rate only shows that he enjoyed incredibly good fortune during his MVP campaign. He will almost certainly regress more towards the mean this year. That should be reflected more in his interception total than any drop in yardage.

The good news for Chiefs fans is that their offense is good enough to survive some poor decisions by Mahomes. There will be a lot of talk about his turnovers in the media, but don’t expect it to really harm Kansas City on the field. His final stat line won’t be as stellar as it was last year, but Mahomes will still play like a star.
