There are always traps on college football schedules that cause great teams to lose. These are the trap games facing every Top 25 team in 2019.

Whenever you look at a new college football season, most fans have no problem looking at the schedule and highlighting which matchups will be the marquee games both for the season and for a given week. We know who’s going to be good and who likely isn’t going to fit that bill. What can be a bit more difficult to discern, however, is the games where the good (or great) teams may potentially have letdowns and slip up.

In that regard, we’re of course talking about the dreaded trap games. Every college football team has them on the schedule, whether they know it or not. Typically, a trap game consists of a few things. First and foremost, you have to look for a game that comes during a tough part of the schedule.

The next ingredient needed for a potential trap game, though, is a team that seemingly looks like a break in that tough part of the schedule. That doesn’t even necessarily mean that they are a cupcake opponent — in fact, it makes it more of a trap game if they aren’t. Instead, it’s a team that is just not on the same level as the other opponents in that stretch.

Lastly, a key part of a potential trap game is that the game has to mean something. Whether that means it’s a rivalry game or a conference matchup, the contest just has to have some sort of implication beyond just being a win or a loss.

Avoiding trap games in college football, as simple as it may seem, is crucial to a team achieving their potential and success. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the top 25 teams for 2019 and highlight their biggest trap game on the schedule that they need to be wary of.
