Each NFL team’s most important game in 2019
New York Giants: Week 1 at Dallas Cowboys
There was a 1-7 start as well as a three-game losing streak to end the season. In between there, the New York Giants won four times in a five-game stretch. And that included a 30-27 overtime victory over the eventual NFC North champion Chicago Bears. Still, this is a club that has combined for an 8-24 record the past two seasons after winning 11 games and claiming a playoff berth in 2016.
This offseason, general manager Dave Gettleman continued his reshaping of the roster. You will recall that last October the club dealt away players like defensive tackle Damon Harrison and cornerback Eli Apple. In March, talented wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and pass-rusher Olivier Vernon were traded to the Cleveland Browns. And when it was all said and done after one night at Nashville in April, the Giants selected three players in the first round.
Of course, the club used the sixth overall pick on quarterback Daniel Jones from Duke University. He’s the franchise’s choice as the heir apparent to veteran Eli Manning. But when will the transition begin? It figures to be an interesting summer. And perhaps the bigger question when it comes to Big Blue and its season opener at AT&T Stadium is not whether the team can snap its recent losing ways vs. the Dallas Cowboys but who will be behind center at the start of 2019?
