Early DraftKings MLB Picks June 29: Hello Yamamoto

The Yankees and Red Sox get their own showdown over in London, but the other 14 games are pretty evenly split for our DraftKings MLB tournaments. The eight game early slate is the larger one, but does that necessarily mean better? We wont know until we break it down properly! First, the weather:

More from DraftKings

Rain: Baltimore(very slight), Miami(slight), New York(very slight)

Wind: 12 mph out to right in Baltimore, 12 mph crosswind in New York

Hot and humid: Baltimore, Miami, New York, Cincinnati

I am guessing the roof will be closed in Miami, which will neutralize that threat. The rest is just pop up showers, but it’s mid 90’s without the heat index in New York, Cincy, and Baltimore anyway. It’s going to be a day of offense in most places.

Paying down at pitcher was the way to go with Clevinger getting blasted and Cole Hamels leaving after just one inning. Anibal Sanchez with a Coors stack proved a nice line, but again, I didn’t come out ahead until a nice finish in the last slate thanks to Matt Olson.

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on, and we all attack the slate from different angles.

ANAHEIM, CA – MAY 01: Marcus Stroman #6 of the Toronto Blue Jays pitches in the first inning of the game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on May 1, 2019 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images) /

DraftKings MLB Pitcher Plays:

Top Tier:

Marcus Stroman ($9,900): That’s a big price hike on Stroman, but it’s hard to say that it isn’t deserved. The Royals are only hitting .171 against Stroman in 35 at bats with three runs and ten strikeouts. Stroman blanked the Red Sox for six innings in Boston in his last start. Do you really think he’s going to have trouble with the Royals? Stroman as a 3.04 ERA for a reason.

Jordan Yamamoto ($9,100): Til the wheels fall off, right? Yamamoto held the Phillies to two runs on two hits (but four walks) in Philly last week. It was the least sharp Yamamoto has looked in the major so far, and he still racked up 21.7 DraftKings points. Yamamoto is a low risk proposition at home. I don’t mind using him as my ace today.

Middle Tier:

Zach Plesac ($8,600): Plesac has posted a 2.33 ERA over his first six major league starts and his price is still this low. He doesn’t have elite strikeout stuff which keeps the ceiling lower, but if he’s going to keep allowing less than one baserunner per inning, he’s still giving us good return. My only issue here is it’s really hot in Baltimore. The Orioles don’t have a whole lot of power, but on a day like this they might. Still, I think Plesac is worth the risk, especially on a smaller slate.

Austin Voth ($8,100): Voth looked really good against the Phillies in his debut last week. Now he gets to take his talent to an AL Park, which means dealing with the DH. However, it’s the Tigers, so designated hitter should be used loosely. There are better hitting pitchers around than what Detroit will throw out there. Comerica Park is also a know pitcher’s haven. Things are lining up very well for Voth again.

Bargain Pitchers:

Brendan McKay ($7,600): McKay is one of the best prospects on any team at any level, so I can see taking a chance with him here. The Rangers have some dangerous pieces, but more rookies with McKay’s pedigree have dazzled in their first starts this year than fizzled. He’s worth taking a shot with on a short slate.

Homer Bailey ($7,100): Am I really about to pay this for a guy named Homer? You bet! Toronto is one of the few places that isn’t an inferno right now. On top of that, Bailey has allowed just one run in his last three starts combined. Sign me up! The Jays are getting better, but Homer is obviously doing something right lately. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but he actually could be a bargain at this price.

Steven Matz ($6,000): If you are going to use Matz, use him at home. He has a 2.25 ERA in six home starts this year. However, the Braves have picked up seven runs in 11 innings against Matz this year. Matz still picked up 25.8 DraftKings points over those two games though. Price where he is and given his home splits, Matz should have no problems hitting value for this price.

My picks: Yamamoto, Plesac; Yamamoto, Bailey

NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 25: Miguel Sano #22 of the Minnesota Twins hits a two run home run in the first inniing as Austin Romine #28 of the New York Yankees defends at Yankee Stadium on April 25, 2018 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) /

DraftKings MLB Stack Options:

Washington Nationals vs. Gregory Soto:

Gregory Soto was marginally better in his return to the majors a couple of weeks ago, but I would still rather run some Nationals at him. This lineup hammers lefties. The Nationals have a .285 average and .851 OPS against southpaws, and Soto isn’t a very good one at that. Rendon and Trea Turner are elite plays. I also like Michael Taylor and Victor Robles to save a little money. Brian Dozier and Juan Soto are worth a look as well.

Chicago White Sox vs. Michael Pineda:

This White Sox offense has proven itself to be quite potent from time to time and Pinata (instead of Pineda. I’m a Twins fan. I can get away with it) has been busted quite a few times this year. It’s not overly warm in Chicago, but I think Pineda could give up three dongs pitching in Antarctica. Eloy Jimenez and Yoan Moncada (if he plays) are my favorite plays here. You can extend it down to Leury Garcia and Jon Jay as well since Pineda like increasing the degree of difficulty by allowing multiple baserunners per inning.

Minnesota Twins vs. Ivan Nova:

You can definitely stack the other side of this game as well. Nova is just a placeholder for Dylan Cease right now. He’ll be out of the rotation as soon as Cease starts pitching well at AAA. This is the time to take advantage while Nova is still here. Max Kepler and Polanco are my favorite plays today. I also like Jason Castro, Sano, and Nelson Cruz on the second tier of Twins hitters. You could even throw one of the rookie outfielders out there if you’re feeling froggy. If they are ever going to get going offensively, it likely starts against Nova.

DFS MLB: CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – MAY 26: Eugenio Suarez #7 of the Cincinnati Reds hits a RBI single in the first inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on May 26, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Quinn Harris/Getty Images) /

DraftKings MLB daily notes:

Andrew Cashner constantly trolls those who stack against him. It’s his thing. Even on a day like this, I’m not going really hard after him. Still, Cleveland is turning it on right now. Jason Kipnis are still too cheap for what he can do. I’ll take a shot with phenom Bobby Bradley for the price as well. Ramirez is on the paternity list, but that just makes room for Bauers or paying up for Lindor.

The Mets have hit Teheran really hard. Not exactly well, but hard. J.D. Davis, Pete Alonso, Wilson Ramos, Carlos Gomez, Todd Frazier, and Conforto have all homered against Teheran. Frazier and Ramos have each driven in four. I could definitely get on board with an afternoon Mets stack here. Teheran hasn’t really had many implosions this year, but in this kind of weather, it’s always possible.

I can play Matz and take shots at him too. It may not be a bad idea. Josh Donaldson and Freeman have both homered off of him. Beyond that, Camargo and Austin Riley have had success against Matz as well. I would limit exposure to one or two if you are using Matz though.

I don’t care if the Rays are struggling. Adrian Sampson has been awful on the road this year, posting a 6.92 ERA in seven road starts. Just because Meadows and Avi are cold doesn’t mean the rest of the team is. Pham, Willy Adames, and Yandy Diaz are all raking in the last ten games, and they are all reasonably priced. I will have this mini stack in a couple of lineups.

Running Jose Quintana out there with all of the Cincinnati right handed power seems like a good way to lose money. Phillip Ervin, a too cheap Eugenio Suarez, and Jose Peraza have all taken him deep before. I’m also a sucker for the power of Senzel and Puig, especially in this heat.

DraftKings MLB one-off plays:

I don’t see any Oriole that I’m enamored enough with to throw at Plesac. He doesn’t give up a lot of hard contact and this team doesn’t make much hard contact to begin with.

It’s the usual suspects for my Blue Jays one offs here. Well, mostly. Homer Bailey doesn’t give up a lot of home runs, so I’m more targeting Lourdes Gurriel than Vlad here. I will have some shares of Vlad as well though.

More from FanSided

I’m not a huge fan of Royals here either. Alex Gordon looks a little overpriced. Stroman doesn’t give up a ton or runs, but he has given up all his home runs at home. Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler would be the places to chase him.

This could be a sneaky spot for Tigers, depending on how you feel about Austin Voth and his ability to pitch at this level. Castellanos has been on fire over the last couple of weeks, but everyone beyond that is hit and miss. Mostly miss.

The Cubs have hit Luis Castillo way too hard to pay over $11k for him. However, it’s been mostly two guys that have had his number, and they can both be had super cheap. Daniel Descalso and Kyle Schwarber have both homered twice against Castillo and they have a combined 10 RBI in 21 at bats. Kris Bryant has good enough numbers to use as well at a solid discount.

Zach Eflin was tagged for six runs by the Marlins earlier in the year, but he gave up one run in a complete game against them last time out. Who knows what we are getting. This slate is large enough that we can avoid this entire situation. I may put a hot Miguel Rojas out there since he homered against Eflin earlier this year, but that’s about it. Granderson has homered off of him twice, but you can’t trust him right now.

Jean Segura drove in both Phillie runs against Yamamoto last week, so that’s about as far as I’ll go here. We don’t play for walks, but if we did, Bryce Harper walked twice in that game.
