Sweden’s Sofia Jakobsson scores the first goal against Germany (Video)
Sweden and Germany were trading blows in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and Sofia Jakobsson equalized just minutes after Lina Magull scored the first goal.
Germany last won the Women’s World Cup in 2007, and they didn’t allow a single goal throughout the tournament that year. In 2019, Germany’s defense, specifically their center back duo, were highlighted as a possible weak point in the squad, yet heading into the quarterfinals they had similarly held all of their opponents to clean sheets.
That all changed in the 22nd minute of their Knockout stage matchup against Sweden, as Sofia Jakobsson equalized a mere six minutes after Germany forward Lina Magull scored the game’s first goal with a sensational volley. Jakobsson’s goal was less technically brilliant, but it was also a great finish into the far corner.
It must have been especially satisfying for Jakobsson to score not long after Almuth Schult denied her with a top-class foot save.
Sweden are incredibly dangerous on the counterattack, and this goal from Jakobsson exemplified that. This all started from center back Linda Sembrant’s amazing long ball to unlock Germany’s center back duo, which made a mistake in letting Jakobsson loose. Sembrant’s assist atoned for her earlier poor marking against Germany forward Lina Magull and Jakobsson finished with absolute class.
Jakobsson has been dangerous throughout the tournament, but this goal was her biggest moment of the tournament thus far. Germany’s midfield has controlled games even without superstar Dzsenifer Marozsan, and that’s been a big reason why they’ve not conceded yet. But as China showed in the first game of the tournament, Germany can be vulnerable when their back four is defending counters or quick breaks, and this long ball to Jakobsson did them in.
Germany’s scoreless streak is now over, and Sweden continue to show that they can beat tournament favorites. They survived Canada, and they are truly taking the fight to an elite Germany squad.
