The Netherlands and Sweden face each other on Wednesday, July 3 at the Stade Lyon in Lyon. Here’a what to know before you watch.

Defending European champions the Netherlands play Sweden on Wednesday in Lyon in the second semifinal of the Women’s World Cup.

The Dutch are coming off a 2-0 win against Italy in Sunday’s quarterfinal, while Sweden stunned two-time champions Germany 2-1, the biggest upset to date at this tournament, to reach the semifinals.

It was in the scorching heat that the Dutch dominated possession against Italy and used a pair of set-pieces in the second half to snatch the win. In the stands, a sea of orange-clad fans were loud and proud to cheer on their country, something we can expect again at the Stade de Lyon.

Led by striker Vivianne Miedema, the Oranje have a chance to make history at this tournament by winning it for the first time. Only 22, Miedema is the team’s all-time leading scorer with 60 goals in 78 games. At this World Cup, she’s tallied three goals.

Sweden, on the other hand, have the tradition and players to reach the final. Their big win against Germany was a message to all at this tournament that this side is serious about contending for the title.

The team is led by midfielder Kosovare Asslani. Her team-leading two goals and two assists so far at this tournament fail to tell the whole story behind her ability to lead this Sweden side to victory. Look for her to once again marshal the side to a win with her great passing and strong ball possession. The team will be looking to better their best finish ever: third place at the 2011 World Cup.
