Costco is the land of giant bottles of ketchup and all the frozen burger patties you might need for your BBQ, but can you shop there on the 4th of July?
There’s nothing quite like a trip to Costco ahead of a holiday weekend. Savvy shoppers know that Costco is the place to buy all of the food and drinks you need for a party in addition to the supplies and even the decor should you need it. However, the warehouse giant celebrates several holidays every year and it just so happens that it is closed on the 4th of July.
Costco is a shopping phenomenon unto itself. Where else can you buy enough toilet paper in one package to last through the apocalypse? If you’re hosting a party with a lot of guests, it’s the best place to get what you need. And just because it’s a warehouse store doesn’t mean you’re skimping on quality because Costco’s quality is legendary.

The big challenge that comes with shopping at Costco is that they are closed on major holidays so advanced planning is required. Costco is by far the most generous major retailer when it comes to giving employees time off for holidays. All locations are closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. They also have shortened hours that vary by location on the days before big holidays.
The key to shopping at Costco for 4th of July parties is to shop ahead of time. Since the holiday falls on a Thursday in 2019, that makes Wednesday the last day to get everything for the 4th itself, and that means very crowded stores. It’s helpful knowing that stores will be open as usual on the 5th for the rest of the long weekend’s shopping needs.
