Adrian Peterson: Competition in the Backfield

Potential Competition Around Peterson: Heading into 2019, I believe a role for Peterson is way more clear than the public eye see’s. Let’s break it down one player at a time.

Derrius Guice: He is obviously the player that is scaring people away from loving Peterson in 2019 and I get it, Guice was a phenomenal athlete at LSU. Between the months of April and May, we’ve seen conflicting reports regarding if Guice will be ready or not for training camp. My thinking is, why rush him back when your team clearly isn’t contending and when you have someone like Peterson who can “hold the fort down”. My guess is that Guice isn’t 100% come regular season time and gets anywhere from 8-12 touches a game in an Peterson led backfield.

Chris ThompsonHe is a talented receiving back but the biggest knock on his game is his durability. Thompson once again missed time last year, only appearing in 10 games. Thompson only had 10+ rushes/receptions in 4 of those 10 games so he didn’t really have much of a role in 2018. Piggy backing off of his injury history, Thompson has missed 41 of the 96 games in his 6 year NFL career. That means Thompson has only played in 42% of possible games throughout his career. Unfortunately, we can’t expect him to stay healthy, which means we can’t expect him to have much of a role in 2019.

Bryce Love: Reports all off-season have said that Love has been experiencing knee stiffness while like his teammate Derrius Guice, is recovering from a torn ACL. Love is another player who is a stud when healthy. in 2017 while at Stanford, Love rushed 263 times, piling on 2,118 yards and 19 touchdowns. His outlook in 2019 looks murky due to the fact that we don’t even know if he’s going to be played this season. Currently sitting 4th on the depth chart, I don’t see a reason why the Redskins would force the rookie back before he’s 100% healthy.
