MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Steven Brault (6.3k FD, 5.1k DK) vs. Milwaukee

I have to be honest, I don’t really like Steven Brault as a pitcher and as a Pirates fan, I’ve probably been more critical of him than analysts who are not Bucco fans. Something about Brault has always rubbed me the wrong way and I’ve watched him pitch enough to know that while he has a strong arm, he never inspires confidence in you as a fan because he always seems to give up the big hit that breaks open a game. Well, today I am trying to push my own personal biases aside and I think Brault deserves consideration for GPPs, particularly on DK where he is priced lower than several hitters!

Brault now has seven consecutive starts in which he has allowed three runs or fewer and while he has not pitched deep into games, he is still at least giving his team a chance to remain competitive in his starts. In two starts spanning 11 innings this season, he’s allowed just three runs to Milwaukee while striking out 10.

If you haven’t noticed the Brewers have been struggling at the plate and are coming off two really bad showings in Cincinnati against Sonny Gray and Luis Castillo. Now, Brault is not a pitcher of their caliber, but he is a lefty which means he will match up better against the best hitters in the Milwaukee lineup (Yelich, Moose, and Thames). I noticed a few weeks ago that the Brewers had been struggling against left-handers as I saw them get handled by the likes of Joey Lucchesi, Logan Allen, Drew Pomeranz, and more recently even Wade LeBlanc.

PNC Park is a great place for lefties to pitch as it suppresses right-handed power with how spacious left and center field is out there. Give Brault a hard look as your SP2 on DK as a way to save some precious salary cap for bats.
