It’s pretty difficult to shock wrestling fans these days. But on the June 24 edition of Raw jaws did drop as The Undertaker made a surprise appearance to save Roman Reigns from a beatdown at the hands of Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre. Now the four of them are set to tangle in a No-Holds Barred match at WWE Extreme Rules.

The Undertaker’s last match against Goldberg at WWE Super ShowDown fell apart after Goldberg accidentally busted himself open on the ring post. At the conclusion of the match it was obvious Undertaker was frustrated with the results and knowing “The Deadman’s” work ethic he wasn’t going to go out that way. Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated recently reported that The Undertaker specifically requested a match with Drew McIntyre to serve as redemption.

In previous interviews, McIntyre has spoken highly of The Undertaker. During an episode of the Sam Roberts Show, McIntyre described how The Undertaker gave him advice on character development and in-ring psychology during his first run with the WWE.

It’s also worth noting that Undertaker has a history with both Shane McMahon and Roman Reigns. At WrestleMania 32 McMahon and Undertaker had a Hell in a Cell match which saw McMahon make an insane dive from the top of the 20-foot steel cage landing through a table as he missed an elbow drop on The Undertaker. “The Big Dog” is the one who defeated Undertaker in the WrestleMania 33 main event which many thought would be Undertaker’s final match.

Reigns, McMahon and McIntyre have their own history together as well. McIntyre raised Reigns’ ire enough to cause them to battle at WrestleMania 35 in Reigns’ first singles match back since recovering from leukemia. McMahon found himself involved when Reigns dropped Vince McMahon with a Superman punch during an episode of SmackDown. To stack the odds, Shane and McIntyre joined forces against Reigns, which is what caused The Undertaker to get involved in the first place.

A lot of history and a lot of things to prove are wrapped up in a match where the no-holds barred stipulation will no doubt translate to chaos and carnage. It might be difficult to determine the winners from the losers after this match is over.

The Extreme Rules pay-per-view takes place on Sunday, July 14, 2019 and is available through WWE Network.
