Justin Fields will wish he had stayed put

Speaking of one-time Georgia quarterbacks, Justin Fields traded in his Bulldog red for some Ohio State scarlet this year, and he’s projected to be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes in 2019.

Had this been any other season since 2012, it would probably have been the best move for the former number one overall prospect in the country. That said, 2019 is going to be a bit of a rollercoaster year at Ohio State, and Fields (who only saw limited mop-up duty in his one season at Georgia) will struggle to handle the mixed bag of results.

The departure of Urban Meyer as head coach from a Division I program has spelled disaster in the past. Utah went from undefeated in Meyer’s final season to a 7-5 record the following year. Florida went from seemingly contending every year for a national title to 8-6 in 2011 following Meyer’s health-related exit.

It’s probably not going to be much different for Ohio State, and Justin Fields has zero experience in lifting a major program out of the quagmire that can happen under a new head coach.

This isn’t to say Fields won’t have some great moments and show precisely why he was so highly thought of coming out of Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Georgia. However, he’ll likely have some soul-searching moments when he wishes he, his cannon arm, and his legs were feasting on some SEC East competition rather than slugging it out with the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Penn State.
