There were wondergoals galore at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, but which strikes cracked the top 10?
An average of 2.81 goals were scored per match in the 2019 Women’s World Cup, with 16 of the 146 goals coming outside of the penalty box, per Squawka.com. That means narrowing down the list of top 10 goals in the World Cup is a tricky task, and ranking them is even more difficult given the sheer number of quality strikes.
But it’s a task nevertheless worth embarking on, because any reason to cherish the best goals scored at a World Cup is always a good reason. From Amandine Henry’s sensational strike in the tournament’s first game to Jackie Groenen’s winner in the semifinals, here were the top 10 goals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
10. Jackie Groenen, Netherlands vs. Sweden
If this were a list of the best matches in the World Cup this year, Netherlands vs. Sweden would undoubtedly be in the top five. These two powerhouse nations traded blows for 90 minutes but couldn’t manage to find the back of the net, thanks to incredible goalkeeping from Sari van Veenendaal and Hedvig Lindahl.
It would take a special goal to beat either keeper, but, thankfully for the Netherlands, Jackie Groenen had a wondergoal in her. In the 99th minute of extra time, Groenen took a pass in her stride, wound up, and hammered home to the far corner where Lindhal didn’t have a prayer of getting a hand on the ball.
This was a fantastic goal and stands as the highlight of the tournament for Groenen, who established herself as one of the top midfielders in world football.
