Welcome to the debut edition of Three Up, Three Down, where I’ll strive to give you some recommendations on MLB DFS arms, bats and stacks to either hone in on or avoid for that particular slate.

First, I’ll focus on plays that would fit well (Three Up) for either cash games or Guaranteed Prize Pools (GPPs). However, in the relatively rare event any particular suggestion is really geared more to one or the other, I’ll make sure to denote that in the write-up.

Naturally, especially on larger slates, there will be multiple appealing options to consider in each of these categories. As such, I’ll also make mention of those underneath the discussion on the primary recommendation.

Then, I’ll also take a look at the flip side of things and try to identify a pitcher, hitter and team you’ll want to stay away from selecting in your lineups (Three Down).  When applicable, I’ll also identify other stay-away candidates besides the main ones being highlighted for each of the three categories.

The players and teams identified in both sections will be selected based on a variety of factors, including matchups and advanced statistics.

Before we go into today’s Three Up, Three Down, a few particulars about format and content:

• The nature of the beast with MLB DFS is at least a modest amount (and sometimes substantially more) of risk. For all its advanced stats, baseball can still be notoriously fickle and difficult to predict.
• You’ll note that this column will not be written from a site-specific perspective. As such it will not include salaries for any individual players listed. With so many DFS operators, the most efficient way of presenting the information is simply making a case for or against so that you can then act accordingly on the site(s) on which you choose to play.
• The players and stacks highlighted in this column will first and foremost be chosen based on matchups and metrics that favor or work against them, as opposed to what their general salary range might be. Therefore, you may just as well see suggestions on elite-level players/stacks as you might on more modestly priced options.

With those housekeeping items out of the way, let’s first dive into what the most appealing options are on today’s slate. Then, we’ll follow that up with some recommendations on what players and teams you might want to steer clear of.
