The Emmy nominations were announced earlier this morning. And unfortunately, The Big Bang Theory didn’t provide enough of the bang we were hoping for.

At just shy of 280 episodes in a 12-year run, The Big Bang Theory made television history this past season as the longest-running single-camera sitcom ever aired. It surpassed the likes of other iconic shows such as Friends and Cheers. So naturally, one would think its final year would garner it some recognition for the television academy.

Sadly, this turned out not to be the case. Take a first glance at the nominees, there are a lot of very deserving names across these major categories. But to not have anyone from a show as trailblazing as The Big Bang Theory is a total buzzkill.

It’s not just the cast that got the big stink bomb, either. No one on the amazing team of writers (I say with the slightest hint of bias here) received any kind of recognition either. To be fair to the Emmys, they did nominate Mark Cendrowski for his direction of the finale episode, cleverly entitled “The Stockholm Syndrome.”

Additionally, The Big Bang Theory has garnered well over 50 nominations across its run. According to the official website of the Emmys, the show has earned a total of 55 nominations and 10 total wins, including four wins for series lead Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper. Editor Peter Chakos has just as many awards won for the show. The other two wins came via the technical direction team in the 2013 episode “The Higgs Boson Observation” and from Bob Newhart for Guest Actor in a Comedy series in the role of Professor Proton.

Needless to say, The Big Bang Theory was, and always will be, a success of a series. Nevertheless, the academy seemed to break away from its usual tradition of awarding a finale of a show with as many nominations as possible. Perhaps 12 years may have been too long of a run for the show?

Who are we kidding? Many of us fans, like yours truly, wish that it were still on the air. Or in this particular case, coming back for more seasons like Modern Family is doing on ABC. Oh well, the old saying very much applies here that even good things must come to an end.

Regardless, the Emmys could have been a bit more generous to The Big Bang Theory in terms of nominations for its final season.
