MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Jack Flaherty (7.7k FD, 7.4k DK) vs. Pittsburgh

So just a quick note before I get to Flaherty. This is for any other long-suffering Pirates fans out there. Just when you were hanging on to some delusional hope and belief that this Pittsburgh team was going to contend in the second half, they have come out and gone 0-4 after the break and look bad at the plate, on the mound, and in the field (I’m looking at you, Corey Dickerson).

So I will channel my anger for my favorite team’s poor second half start into using a pitcher against them tonight. No this isn’t a reverse jinx situation, either.

The Pirates have been bad at the plate lately and were shut out last night by the great Miles Mikolas! Tonight they will see the Cards best pitcher in Jack Flaherty, a guy who badly underperformed in the first half which has kept his price low on both sites.

I’m not sure I understand why he’s 7.4k on Draftkings when Dylan Cease is 9k but it doesn’t really matter because he’s pretty much a lock for my SP2 in cash games at that price. Flaherty is a talented pitcher who happens to be coming off one of his best starts of the season last time out.

He is still striking out over a hitter per inning this year and his XFIP is almost a full run lower than his ERA meaning he has the potential for some progression in the second half. The Pirates could always surprise us and decide to hit, but you really can’t pass up a pitcher of Flaherty’s caliber at these prices tonight.
