4. Minnesota Twins

The Twins were due for some regression after a fast start. Amid a constant string of injuries over the last several weeks, expected correction from starting pitchers Jake Odorizzi and Martin Perez. a bullpen thin on reliable arms and some defensive shortcomings at times, they’ve watched a big chunk of their AL Central lead evaporate.

At the top of the rotation, Jose Berrios had been dealing with a blister issue and he has failed to get past five innings in each of his last two starts. Odorizzi had a blister problem of his own that kept him from pitching in the All-Star game, and he has a 6.46 ERA over his last five starts. Kyle Gibson can’t be counted on from start to start, and there’s a solid argument Michael Pineda has been Minnesota’s best starter lately.

Beyond making moves to help ward off the Indians, and effectively put them away in the coming weeks, the Twins should still have an eye on making a dent in October. Adding a bullpen arm or two is definitely a priority order, but Bauer would look pretty good in the starting rotation. Assuming Cleveland would even consider trading him to the team they’re chasing.
