Ranking the 50 most visually-appealing college football uniforms
By Zach Bigalke
It takes more than merely aesthetics to declare a truly great college football uniform. The memories attached to that uniform are just as important as the design aspects that go into physical appearance. And in the 21st century, few schools have vaulted their sartorial game to the forefront of the football world than the Mountaineers of Appalachian State.
The black and white togs with the yellow trim offer a clean, distinctive look. Nobody is mistaking the team with the giant A on the side of their black helmets for anyone other than App State. In the middle of the 2000s, the Mountaineers were the gold standard of the FCS, winning three straight national championships adorned in their trademark look.
What most people remember about Appalachian State, though, is their landmark takedown of a top-five Michigan team at the Big House in 2007. With that victory etched indelibly in the memory, so too are these uniforms as one of the great looks of the 21st century.
In recent years, the school has embraced the use of yellow more boldly as an alternate uniform color for both jerseys and pants. It provides a range of great options for one of the Sun Belt’s preeminent programs.
