While there is something to be said about a classic uniform scheme, there is also something to be said about creating a new uniform that feels like an instant classic the first time players wear it out of the tunnel. Memphis is one school that has pulled off that latter feat in style.

When a school has an animal mascot that bears a distinctive pattern in real life, it only seems natural to want to incorporate that pattern into the team’s uniforms. Sometimes it can turn out quite gaudy, especially when one’s school colors in no way resemble any species of the animal in question.

Memphis could have easily fallen into the trap of botching the execution of a completely understandable impulse. Instead, the Tigers have bedecked themselves in stripes that work surprisingly well with the blue and grey of the school colors. Including various grays and black in the schemes, Memphis has produced some spectacular combinations in recent years.

It is a more recent development for the program, yet it feels like a completely natural integration that probably should have been implemented long ago. As the Tigers continue to contend in the American Athletic Conference, they get even more opportunities to showcase their outfits to the football-watching world.
