Theo Riddick released: Fantasy context for 2019
By Raju Byfield
With Detroit Lions receiving specialist Theo Riddick being released, Rizzla analyzes what this news means for the fantasy values of Kerryon Johnson and the Lions other skill players.
In a surprise move, the Detroit Lions have released long time receiving back Theo Riddick. This move blindsided many outside of Detroit, but the $3.66 million dollar savings from his release was already a talking point in the state of Michigan. The release of Riddick not only cleared cap space, but cleared a 53 man roster spot for free-agent signee in former Green Bay Packer Mike Daniels.
This was a shrewd move for a franchise that looked set to overpay their third-string running back. Kerryon Johnson is fully capable of handling third-down duties on his own, and the team added a competent pass-catching back in Ty Johnson during the 2019 NFL Draft. Recouping just over 40-percent of Mike Daniels salary by cutting him was a sound business decision.
This does not necessarily spell the end of Riddick’s time with the Lions. In the event of an injury, Riddick could be offered a veterans minimum contract to return to the team. With that said, Riddick should have some interest around the league from teams that are in the market for a receiving back.
This is a great move for fantasy owners of the Detroit Lions skill players as there are a lot fewer mouths to feed on offense. Riddick’s release opens up a whopping 74 targets from last season. Riddick averaged 72.5 targets and 57 receptions over his last two seasons with the Lions. He has averaged 77.75 targets over his last four seasons with the team.
