Many think that Gervonta Davis is the next big star in boxing. He took care of business against Ricardo Nunez, but who’s next?

Gervonta Davis (22-0, 21 KOs) had a joyous homecoming in Baltimore and easily defended his WBA super featherweight title against Ricardo Nunez (21-3, 19 KOs). Davis made quick work of Nunez, but that was expected. Now, he needs another champion to bring his name recognition to the next level.

Before fighting Davis, Nunez never fought in the U.S. In fact, Nunez had never fought outside of his home country of Panama. His KO rating of 82 percent coming into the fight looked good on paper, but his résumé was lacking. He also had two defeats against unknown opponents.

Davis won the first round, but Nunez was never hurt. It was a competitive round, and Nunez looked better than expected. He also impressed to start round 2.

Nunez hit Davis with several punches during the first half of round 2. As his confidence rose, so did his vulnerability. During a clinch, Nunez left his chin open, and Davis made him pay with a crushing left hand that he didn’t see coming.

Nunez was severely hurt, and Davis pressed him against the ropes. Davis snuck in hands behind Nunez’s guard and opened him up. He connected with another left hand that had Nunez flopping against the ropes. Referee Harvey Dock felt that Nunez couldn’t defend himself and he stopped the fight.

Ringside commentator Paulie Malignaggi thought that the stoppage was premature, but Nunez appeared defenseless. It’s hard to fault Dock for stopping the fight.

Davis did what he needed to do against an opponent who didn’t stand a chance. For some reason, Boxrec.com had Nunez rated as the 32nd best super featherweight in the world despite a lack of experience against notable opponents.

Davis needs a well-known opponent in his next fight to add star power to his name. After the bout, he suggested Tevin Farmer as his next opponent.

“I want Tevin [Farmer] my next fight,” said Davis. “Let’s get it on later this year.”

Davis looked superb against another overmatched opponent. Hopefully, he will have the chance to demonstrate his wares against one of the world’s best in his next outing.
