MLB DFS Pitching Plays

Alex Wood – I think it’s safe to say not many people will be touting Alex Wood today. He Hasn’t made an MLB start since September 3rd of last season. What we do know is he most recently had a six-inning game in an AA rehab assignment, and gave up one run, striking out four.

He did throw 85 pitches so the assumption would be he may have a very minor pitch count set at around 90 pitches, but that’s not very harsh considering the price tag. Today he gets the Rockies away from Coors Field, which means we can feel free to target them with pitchers. Basically, the main problems will be Arenado, and Story.

Pitch Mix – From what I could find on Brooks Baseball, Wood was very sinker heavy, with a slider, and change that he also uses around 28% of the time. The slider got around 38% whiffs, with each of these pitches getting over 50% GB. This is important because Colorado hits a good bit of FB, so he will need to keep the ball on the ground against this team. I would expect his velocity to take a slight dip, from the already slow rates, which we really won’t know until he actually pitches.

Last year the change got really good horizontal movement at nine inches, the sinker also got seven inches and 8 inches of vertical movement. Colorado hits a lot of GB against the sinker, with a pretty low ISO, so he will need to stick to his past tendencies to have success in this spot, but if he does Wood is a great GPP play and SP2 on DK.
