Tua Tagovaioa came to Alabama with the five-star hype as the greatest prospect to come out of Hawaii. He left Alabama as a living legend. He had to wait until the final game of his freshman year to cement his status as one of the program’s best when he came off the bench to lead Alabama to a comeback, overtime win against Georgia in the National Championship Game. That was the jumping-off point for Tua who became a one-name superstar in the following two years.
After beating Jalen Hurts for the starting job as a sophomore, Tua led Alabama to the National Championship Game but lost to Clemson. Tua also put up Heisman-worthy numbers for much of the season until an ankle injury opened the door for Kyler Murray to win at the finish line. Tua and the Tide got revenge in the semifinal game when they defeated Murray’s Oklahoma Sooners, however. Tua finished second in the Heisman after shattering Alabama records with 3,966 yards and 43 passing touchdowns to only six interceptions. He was a Consensus All-American and won the Maxwell and Walter Camp.
Expectations were high for Tua’s junior year but injuries beset what ended up being his final season in Tuscaloosa. He finished with 33 touchdowns to only three interceptions and still finished tenth in the Heisman voting despite the dislocated hip ending his season prematurely. That goes to show you the type of impact he had when healthy.
