25 modern book-to-screen adaptations that didn’t let us down
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Netflix has been releasing plenty of book-to-screen adaptations over the past few years, and one of its more recent ones that excited the young adult book community is To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Based on Jenny Han’s contemporary novel of the same name, both renditions of the story follow Lara Jean, a teenage girl who writes love letters to all of her crushes over the years, putting them away for safekeeping afterward. But one day, Lara’s letters are accidentally sent out — resulting in a bit of chaos, along with some unexpected romantic developments.
A story that’s both fluffy and cute, Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before maintains the novel’s lighthearted humor and sweet romantic storyline in a way that still manages to keep viewers of all ages engaged. In fact, seeing Lana Condor and Noah Centineo act out the story is better in some ways, as both actors have plenty of talent and on-screen chemistry with one another.
The series has also gotten positive feedback for its representation of Asian-American culture, which keeps Lara Jean’s background present but never makes it a major plot point. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has also been noted as one of the few well-known rom-com stories to feature an Asian-American teenager as its lead, something that we’ll hopefully see more of given the series’ success.
