The century-mark edition of the Sooners’ football program was a force to be reckoned with en route to their National Championship at the end of the season. Led by the stellar play of quarterback Josh Heupel, the Sooners beat six ranked teams and went a perfect 13-0 on the season. Bob Stoop’s squad dominated teams like No. 11 Texas and No. 2 Kansas State during the season.
They’d eventually wind up with an Orange Bowl berth, putting on an incredibly stingy defensive showcase in a 13-2 win over the No. 3 Florida State Seminoles to hang onto their No. 1 overall rating. The Sooners beat six ranked teams over the course of the year in total including that win over the defending champs.
The 2000 Sooners team featured three All-Americans, in linebacker Rocky Calmus, the aforementioned starting quarterback Josh Heupel and safety J. T. Thatcher. Heupel won the Water Camp Award at the end of the season.
In his second season as head coach, Bob Stoops led the Sooners from their initial ranking at No. 19, to the No. 1 spot before the end of the season, where they would sit through the end, winding up with not only a Big 12 title, but as the consensus National Champions for the 2000 season.
