4. Best college football teams of all-time: 1945 Army

There was zero contest when I was thinking about which teams to put near the top of this list. I had to take the 1945 Army team into consideration for being the best team in history– the team absolutely dominated the game in 1945. Fresh out of World War II, the United States could finally get back into peak sporting mode as the nation’s elite athletes and patriots could once again return home after valiantly serving in World War II.

Army averaged 48 points a game in this season, while only giving up five points on the way to five shutout games in the season. The totals make sense when you consider their closest game was a 19-point victory.

The Black Knights have had some impressive teams over the years, thanks to peak athleticism from the cadets and a long history in the sport, but perhaps none better than the team that featured two players who would win a Heisman in their career– Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis.

Their rivals scattered out of the way, with Army handing them losses by scores of 480 against Notre Dame and 32-12 against Navy. If it’s any indication of just how good this team was in 1945, it’s worth noting they won the National Championship in 1944, the year prior and played Notre Dame (the eventual National Champions) to a scoreless tie the next year, in what was called the “Game of the Century.”

The Black Knights did more than enough to earn a high spot on this list, among college football’s historic best. They are also one of the most forgotten teams in modern football history.
