Fantasy Football: Rounds 1-3 Breakdown

My Picks:

1.06: Melvin Gordon | RB | LAC

2.19: JuJu Smith-Schuster | WR | PIT

3.30: T.Y. Hilton | WR | IND

Fantasy Football Analysis:

As you may expect, running backs flew off the board right away in the first round, with DeAndre Hopkins being the only non-RB taken at pick #5. I’m a firm believer in locking up a top tier RB in your first two rounds, whether it be via the 1-RB or 2-RB strategy and Melvin Gordon fit the bill here, posting top 8 RB numbers in three consecutive seasons, giving him an elite floor.

While his holdout may cause some concern and has his current ADP dropping rapidly, he officially requested a trade as of August 1st. With that being the case, this should raise the likelihood that he’s on an active roster for Week 1.

The second round direction hinges on your first pick. If you choose a receiver, I recommend going running back, but if you chose a running back like I did here, securing a top-end wide receiver is my goal and you should consider JuJu Smith-Schuester a gift anywhere from picks 14-24.

While he’ll garner more defensive attention without Antonio Brown in town, JuJu was already 4th in the league last season in targets, 2nd in red-zone targets, and tied for 4th in red-zone receptions and should be force-fed the ball in the Steelers’ passing game.

Round 3 is all about the best available player, as I try and have my RB1 and WR1 locked up. In this case, I tend to look towards sheer volume as a metric and that’s one reason why T.Y. Hilton is high on my priority list. He was a top-15 receiver in terms of targets last season and now has a plethora of weapons to take the pressure off of him on offense (Ebron, Funchess, Doyle, Hines).

Priority Players that were sniped: Round 3 – Keenan Allen (2 picks ahead of my Hilton pick)
