WWE SummerSlam 2019 preview: United States Championship match
The United States Championship title has changed hands between current champion, AJ Styles, and his opponent, Ricochet. At SummerSlam, we’re getting a rematch from Extreme Rules.
Back at Stomping Grounds, Ricochet beat Samoa Joe to gain the United States Championship (and Seth Rollins told Will Ospreay that WWE had their own version of him). After winning, the One and Only was challenged by AJ Styles right away. At the following Raw, the pair had a non-title match. Styles was victorious and reunited with his Bullet Club/The Club buddies, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, who promptly beat up the U.S. Champion.
Last month at Extreme Rules, Styles beat Ricochet via pinfall to become the current U.S. champion. With that win, The Phenomenal One became a three-time U.S. Champ.
On last week’s Raw, Ricochet had to compete in a gauntlet match for another opportunity at the U.S. Championship. The participants were Rey Mysterio, Cesaro, Sami Zayn and Andrade. Ricochet was the last entrant and faced Andrade, whom he pinned with a 630.
Since this is taking place at SummerSlam, it would’ve been a better match if there were some sort of stipulation instead of a routine rematch. But even with it being a rematch, this could still be a stand out purely because of the two men in the ring. They are simply two of the company’s best and are capable of a match of the night any time they get in the ring.
Now known as “The O.C.,” the Styles-Anderson-Gallows trio have been heels ever since. They’ll likely do more heel things during this rematch, unless they’re banned from ringside. Unless his former tag team partner, Aleister Black, has his back, Ricochet is essentially in a three-on-one handicap match.
Having the Good Brothers involved is pretty much expected, so this should prove to be a solid yet predictable match. With all three Club members carrying gold, it would be safe to bet that Styles retains.
