Nebraska actually has depth at quarterback

It might seem silly to have backup quarterback depth listed as a reason Nebraska football will win the Big Ten West, but if you watched the team last season, you will understand why.

If the Huskers had better depth at the position in 2018, they would have been bowl eligible. Yet, due to circumstances, Frost couldn’t control, former walk-on Andrew Bunch was the replacement for Martinez and that hurt, likely costing Nebraska two games.

This season, if the team is serious about winning the division, it can’t afford to drop a game or two because if Martinez gets injured, even with something minor, with Luke McCaffrey as an option, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Noah Vedral, who wasn’t eligible at the start of last season, will also add some depth. Vedral and McCaffrey, the younger brother of Carolina Panthers back Christian McCaffrey, will compete for the backup job. Regardless of who wins, the Huskers now have the depth to sustain themselves if Martinez ends up missing time and that wasn’t the case a year ago.
