WWE NXT UK preview August 8, 2019: Watch online
By Jeremy Klein
A preview of the August 7, 2019 edition of NXT UK, featuring a main event clash between Joe Coffey and Dave Mastiff.
Actually, before we dive in to this week’s edition of NXT UK, here’s a brief recap of last week’s edition of the show that we missed:
WALTER dared Johnny Saint and Sid Scala to name one person on the NXT UK roster left to challenge him for the United Kingdom Championship. At that moment — straight out of the medical tent at Download Festival — Tyler Bate emerged in sandals to ambush the champ and stake his claim. Following a pull-apart, Sid Scala announced WALTER versus Bate for the WWE United Kingdom Championship at TakeOver: Cardiff.
After Bate received his title match, Jordan Devlin demanded satisfaction from Scala. Instead, he got Alexander Wolfe, who pinned the Irish Ace in a competitive main event to keep Imperium’s winning streak rolling.
Gallus (Mark Coffey and Wolfgang) easily defeated Stoker and Howley, now doing business as Pretty Deadly. FanSided regrets not being here last week to make a timely and hilarious, “Not so pretty nor deadly now eh,” joke. Coffey and Wolfgang then called out Grizzled Young Veterans, claiming they themselves would “sssssoon” be the new owners of the NXT UK Tag Team Championships. Pencil it in for Cardiff!
Rhea Ripley’s foot is all better and she squashed Dani Luna, before telling the disembodied interviewing hand of NXT UK that no woman on the brand’s roster can live up to her. She figures to still be near the top of the women’s division regardless of who walks out of Cardiff as champion.
With all that out of the way, let’s tackle this week, the August 8 edition of NXT UK.
Since his post-Blackpool re-debut, Dave Mastiff has been a target of the gang of ruffians known as Gallus. What gives? Are they put off by the notion that he’s stronger than them? Do they fear that his burly stature and large beard takes the shine away from them, a group of burly bearded dudes? Is it just jealousy that the camera shakes when he stomps in the ring during his entrance, whereas the camera does nothing cool when the three of them cross their arms at the same time?
Regardless, we have arrived at yet another match in the Piper Niven versus Rhea Ripley mold. That is, a match we would much rather be seeing on a big stage at TakeOver: Cardiff, but are not going to complain at all about getting to watch. As Joe Coffey himself put it, this is top boy against top boy.
Both boys have proven to be in or near the upper echelon of NXT UK talent, and their interactions in that fatal four-way hinted at what could be a great singles match. Here’s hoping we get it.
Elsewhere, someone must have read the last NXT UK recap, because Piper Niven and Xia Brookside are teaming up again! Hoping to at last pluck a lingering thorn out of Brookside’s … uhhh … side, the pair take on Jinny and Jazzy Gabert. Yes, the Xia Brookside/Jinny (featuring much assistance from Jazzy) saga continues on. Will Brookside finally be able to best her rival, or are we destined to do this dance forever?
Either way, we will (hopefully) at last be treated to a prolonged sequence of Piper Niven and Jazzy Gabert throwing down. There were teases of this in the first-ever NXT UK women’s battle royal and the equally as first-ever NXT UK six-woman tag team match. Now, it’s a chance for the most dominant woman in NXT UK and an also very dominant woman in NXT UK — whose finisher is literally called “The Dominator” — to slug it out. Exciting!
