WWE SummerSlam 2019 preview: Charlotte Flair vs. Trish Stratus
Dream matches come true at SummerSlam when WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus comes out of retirement to face Charlotte Flair.
The seven-time WWE Women’s Champion and Hall of Famer Trish Stratus is stepping into the ring one more time to go to war with the nine-time Women’s Champion, Charlotte Flair.
Stratus, arguably the best female performer in the WWE Attitude Era has a tall order going against Flair, who is arguably the most talented female performer in women’s wrestling today. On paper this match already sings. Knowing the two women’s collective history of matches, and the energy Stratus’ hometown of Toronto is sure to bring, this match will go down as an all-time classic.
Things between the two have already started to heat up as Stratus delivered fiery promos with seamless ease causing Flair to up her game into some of her best mic work to date. It culminated on the go-home SmackDown Live show where Stratus struck Flair upside the head. Flair composed herself and left the ring because quite frankly, no one is going to blows until SummerSlam.
Online it’s a different story as shots are being fired back and forth across the bow. Flair has dubbed herself “Queen of all Eras” while Stratus went one step further calling herself “Queen of Queens” and reminding everyone she was the “queen who will put you in your place“ according to the song lyrics written for her entrance theme by Lil’ Kim.
Having Stratus back in the ring is always a treat. When Stratus made a surprise return at the first ever women’s Royal Rumble the crowd popped. It was then that we saw Stratus mingle with the Superstars of today including Sasha Banks. That small encounter left many hoping Banks and Stratus would have a singles match somewhere down the line. But with Banks MIA from wrestling Flair is a logical choice.
You can’t really run SummerSlam, the second biggest pay-per-view event of the year, without having Flair on it. And rather than insert her into a title match to make yet another triple threat, WWE went one better and called on an all-star in Stratus. Given the fact that SummerSlam is taking place in Toronto, Stratus’ hometown, she’s an obvious choice. Toronto is also the place where Stratus had her final match as a full-time competitor when she faced Lita at Unforgiven. Stratus is one of only a handful of Superstars to retire as champion.
Will Toronto be as fruitful this time around or will Flair add another accolade to her impressive resume by defeating the legend?
SummerSlam will take place on August 11, 2019, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Streaming live on the WWE network.
